abend stunde49's video: CALIFORNIA AND YOU - Campbell and Burr 1914

@"CALIFORNIA AND YOU" - Campbell and Burr (1914)
CALIFORNIA AND YOU - Tenor Duet with Orchestra Accompaniment (Edgar Leslie / Harry Puck) Sung by Albert Campbell and Henry Burr Columbia, A1601 (39516), 1914. Please watch at 720p for better picture quality! With its California theme, I couldn't resist sharing this record, old and scratchy though it may be. The Panama-Pacific International Exposition was held in San Francisco between February and December, 1915, and promotion for it began years in advance. Postcards were published and songs were written long before the fair opened. I would not be surprised if "California and You" were written with the upcoming Fair in mind! The 1915 Fair was a "jewel city" of color and romance, set against the magnificent backdrop of San Francisco Bay. The introductory panorama postcard shows this to good effect, I think. The domed, colonaded building, that the video couple first stands in front of, is the Palace of Fine Arts, designed by architect Bernard Maybeck. This was the most beloved of the Fair buildings and the only one remaining today. It can be seen at the start of the panorama, facing its reflective lagoon. Other Fair buildings featured in the video are the Palace of Horticulture and the Tower of Jewels. The postcards and magazine illustrations from 1915 are from my collection. I once lent this record to a museum for an exhibit on the Fair. This, and other songs of the period, were played in the background during the run of the exhibit. "Oh! you old Pacific coast, Oh! you land I love the most, Soon I'll be returning to you, To my sweetheart loving and true! I just mailed a little note Written to the one I miss; Just a simple little note, I began by saying this: Don't you remember, California in September? As we stood in the wood 'neath the beautiful sky, I made you cry, When I whispered good-bye, but Dearie . . . Don't you remember That I promised I'd be true? So expect a choo-choo That's bringing me back To California and you! Oh! you orange-scented air, Oh! you train that brings me there! Ev'ry other country I see, Only makes you dearer to me! Through my Pullman window pane, As my station's drawing near, I can hear myself again, Singing in my honey's ear." Please note that this has been reposted with a new soundtrack.
