@Ant’s Allotment - Harvesting Sugar Baby watermelons in the UK
When to harvest watermelons in the UK. Let’s find out together! The watermelons were watered almost weekly, and given a seaweed feed once a week. In the height of a really hot summer this year I was watering 3 times a week in the greenhouse. The seeds were germinated indoors. And stayed in a sunny, warm place for quite a few weeks until the first true leaves emerged. Whilst germinating I dug well-rotted manure into a bed in the greenhouse. I hand pollinated when the flowers came out. Lots of tiny melon fruit grew. As soon as one became walnut-sized I took a lot of flowers and other fruits off to keep the main fruit growing. Put the fruit on a bed of straw or suspend them/tie them up if you’re limited for space. It’s ripe when the tendril near the fruit has dried ALL the way to the stem. Sometimes you can see that the fruit has a yellow patch where it’s made contact with the ground. They were all delicious! 3 fruit from I think 12 seeds originally.
