Jodiyos Bhatkiyeka Manharu — a Nepali play written by Ashesh Malla and directed by Hari Bahadur Thapa — was staged in an Off-Broadway Theatre of New York, Manhattan on December 13. The audience, that comprised of people of different age groups including 83-year-old Chhyama Bista, were excited to watch a Nepali performance in New York, mentions a press release issued by Anuz Thapa, press coordinator of the play. This is the first time a Nepal play has made it to the Off-Broadway, as per the press statement. The play featured different aspects related to the April 25 earthquake — an elderly woman who had lost her everything in the quake, couple who survived the tremblor, role played by journalists during that time, et cetera. From the excitement of youth active in rescue works to the worries of Nepalis living abroad, the play’s story was able to touch the audience who had come to the theatre from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Washington DC and Boston. The tickets sold out a week prior to the play’s staging, leaving many theatre enthusiasts unable to watch the play. If Broadway Theatre is the largest theatrical venue in New York —where theatrical performances are presented in 40 professional theatres with 500 to 2,000 seating capacity, Off-Broadway Theatre is the second largest venue. These theatres usually have 100 to 499 seating capacity. Two shows of Jodiyos Bhatkiyeka Manharu was staged at 777 Theatre in Manhattan that has the seating capacity of 158. Director Thapa had trained artistes in New York for the play for two months. The cast of the play included Nepalis residing in New York — Nadiya Liwang, Sangita Uprety, Dipika Shrestha, Sahadev Paudel, Anuz Thapa, Krish Thapa, Jyoti Kumar Shrestha, Kristal Thapa, Dilasma Rajak, Yadav Gautam and Bikash Bista.
