@April 28, 2009 - June cools off
Bears can easily overheat in the spring sun because there are no leaves to provide shade. June lies in a pool of cool water and rubs it on her head. Description of video for visually/hearing impaired: April 28, 2009 - June (0.01) 1.29 Video in color. Bright and sunny day. We are zoomed tight to June who is standing in a small pool of water. She scoops up water to her face using her large left paw then lays down in the water. She stands up, scoops more water over her face and circles around in the water. She scoops water up to her face using her left paw. Once turned, she splashes more water over herself with her right paw several times. June shakes her large body then she uses her left paw to scoop more water over her face. She stands still in the water, lifts her head and grunts to nearby cubs that we cannot see. At the end of the video we hear a cub respond. ~~~~~ At the Wildlife Research Institute, biologists Lynn Rogers, Ph.D. and Sue Mansfield, M.S., along with their team of researchers, have spent over 44 years studying black bears and sharing their information with the public. Their work has been recognized as one of the four major studies of large mammals in the world. Using trust rather than traps and tranquilizers, they are conducting the longest, most detailed study of black bear behavior and ecology ever done. A focus is on reducing bear-human conflict. They share information with the public through publications, lectures, field courses, the Internet (bear.org and bearstudy.org), TV documentaries, and the North American Bear Center. The Center is dedicated to advancing the long-term survival of bear populations by replacing misconceptions with facts. Many people say these nonprofit organizations have changed their lives by giving them a better understanding about black bears and making it possible for them to fully enjoy living and hiking in bear habitat.
