Bravo, bravo, don Pasquale (1:52:30) ------------------------------------- A charming and flirtatious rendition. The cast is simply stellar and teaches a great lesson of ease of vocal emission, clear diction, and acting naturalness... Ernesto Badini (1876-1937), here 56, "is" Don Pasquale, experienced, natural, buffo, but not over-caricatured. Badini shows us the heights reached by a lost tradition of "recitar cantando" and the art of being highly expressive while easily singing. Adelaide Saraceni (1895-1995) perfectly renders the difficult role of "acting an actress", as Norina naturally is. In the meanwhile, she is the same able to render the tender and sincerely enamored soul of the courageous, vivacious and protective Norina. Combining expressivity with showing-off (surely, Donizetti did not conceive of "So anch'io la virtù magica" as an occasion for maidenly modesty) is the genius of Italian singing. Obviously here Tito Schipa (1888-1965) is playing one of his best suited roles. The idealistic, romantic, sincere, a bit divorced from reality, Ernesto gives him all the right occasions to put in evidence his best and, to some extent, unmatched skills of "tenore di grazia". M° Cavaliere Carlo Sabajno (1874-1938) served as Toscanini's assistant during the latter's period as chief conductor at Turin and also conducted there himself. From 1904 to 1932, he was the house-conductor of the Italian branch of the Gramophone Company, in fact a "general manager" of the recording projects. Certainly several of his recordings, most of which were made with the Orchestra of La Scala, Milan at a time when Toscanini was musical director there, have stood the test of time.
