Fortunato I'uom che prende ------------------------------------- Jan. 27, 1956: Così fan tutte - The solemn start to the Mozart bicentenary celebrations, the reopening of La Piccola Scala: A rare document of excellent singing and extraordinary conducting by Guido Cantelli, Toscanini's 36 year old protege. Already considered a peer of Toscanini and Furtwängler, Cantelli was at the beginning of a magnificent career. The week following his appointment as Musical Director of La Scala in November, 1956, Cantelli died unexpectedly in a Paris plane crash. This recording is not a studio effort but a rather dimly recorded live performance. The orchestral playing is lithe and disciplined, yet it is never overforced or too ruthless. Here is a conductor who new how to make phrases breathe and sing: Cantelli shows himself to be a potentially great opera conductor. Cantelli's Mozart style reminds one less of Toscanini than the young Karajan who also inspired orchestras to play in a graceful, energetic yet always supremely aristocratic fashion.
