Jodie Foster plays Nell, a girl who grew up in the woods. Nell is raised in the remote backwoods of North Carolina, never having met anyone except her handicapted mother and twin sister. Her twin sister dies at a very young age and when her mother dies too, she is alone and needs to confront the outside world. Due to her isolation Nell never learned proper English, only a mangled form created by her sister and herself; a kind of "twin speak". Country doctor Jerry Lovell (Liam Neeson) who discovered her, wants her to adjust in her own protected surroundings.
