There were many kinds of mosasaurs. The smallest was a mere 3 ft long. The average length was 13 ft at the most. They weren't dinosaurs. These creatures were reptiles. Their close relatives are snakes and monitor lizards. They had short limbs with webbing between fingers and wide tails with broad triangular plates on them. While swimming, the critter kept its body stiff to reduce the drag through the water. The only thing that was moving was its mighty tail. Mosasaurs needed air. That's the reason they preferred shallow coastal waters. They eat pretty much anything: from fish and mollusks to sea birds and turtles. Mosasaurs went extinct about 66 million years ago.
