@Poets of the First World War: Frederick Manning
Eidola read by Charles Bryant Frederick Manning (1882-1935) was an Australian poet and novelist who lived in England for most of his life and took part in the First World War on the Western Front. Biographical details are available from Wikipedia. The poems here are from his collection Eidola (1917) which is freely available on the Net for those wishing to have the text. Eidola is the plural of eidolon meaning a shade or spirit image. Only two possible obscurities in these readings: Iason was the mortal husband of Demeter. Mametz Wood was a position won from the German forces in the First Battle of the Somme with heavy casualties. The photograph is of my uncle Jack Drake (1899-1916) who died on the Western Front while still little more than a boy.
