Early in her career, she briefly used the stage name Shirley Wong. Born in Beijing, she moved to Hong Kong in 1987 & came to public attention in the early 1990s by singing in Cantonese, often combining alternative music with mainstream Chinese pop. Since 1994, she has recorded mostly in her native Mandarin. In 2000, she was recognised by Guinness World Records as the Best Selling Canto-Pop Female. "Red Bean" (Mandarin version) & “Repayment” (Cantonese version) are the same song from Faye Wong's Mandarin album Sing & Play (Chinese: 唱游) released on 8 Oct 1998. The two versions have different lyrics. Since pronunciation is different for the same words for two different languages, different lyrics are needed to match the melody. “Red Bean” is about a girl who realises that love always has an end. Although she knows that she will break up with her boyfriend one day, she still wishes to treat their love as everlasting. In “Repayment”, the girl has already broken up with her boyfriend. However, she is reluctant to let go & move on.
