In this video get behind the wheel of a classic early-nineties Alfa Romeo Spider S4 sports car with carphile.co.uk. The original Alfa Romeo Spider (Duetto) was released in 1996, made famous by Dustin Hoffman in the Graduate. The Spider S4 was released in 1990, nearly a quarter of a century after the original car was launched. Externally, the Spider S4 lost the Spider S3's front under-bumper spoiler and the rear boot spoiler and received rear lights similar to the 164 and car coloured plastic bumpers. Under the bonnet of this S4 sits Alfa's 2.0 litre 4 cylinder twin cam engine, fitted for the first time with Bosch Motronic electronic fuel injection. With 127bhp on tap, enough to propel the 1,110kg car from 0-60 in 9.4 seconds and on to a top speed of 118mph. Driven through the rear wheels through either a 5 speed manual or (for the first time) a 3 speed automatic transmission. This Spider S4 is the 2.0 litre model. All Spider's were originally left hand drive could be converted to Right Hand Drive. This car was converted by Seaking (Alfa Romeo UK approved) at a cost of £2000+ this was not a cheap conversion and when new, brought the S4 into direct competition with far more exotic machinery. Alfa Romeo Spider S4 production ended in 1993 to be replaced by the All new (front wheel drive) Spider in 1995. The Spider S4 was the last rear-wheel drive Alfa Romeo until the 8c Competizione of 2007.
