@Flight Aboard A Dash-7 4-Engine Turboprop To Bahamas In 1993
This is a video clip of a flight aboard a de Havilland Canada DHC-7 (or "Dash 7") 4-engine turboprop airliner on March 27, 1993. This re-mastered video, albeit low quality, was shot on BetaMax tape and converted to VHS, then digitally re-mastered. It has been posted mainly towards an audience for classic / vintage aircraft. The video clip shows Fort Lauderdale airport in March 1993, where "Tri-Jets", such as a Boeing 727, were the norm. The Dash-7 is part of Paradise Island Airlines (or Merv Griffin's former fleet) that flew from Fort Lauderdale International Airport (FLL) to it's "own private airstrip" (PID) on the northeastern tip of Paradise (or, informally, "Hog") Island. This airport was basically "removed" after 1999, and no trace of the airstrip can be seen to this day, with luxury condominiums and a gold course in its place. The video shows details of the flight, with original video, and some shots of the north shore of Paradise Island (north of Nassau), as well as the airport in Fort Lauderdale long before the south runway was extended. The DHC-7 (or "Dash-7") is a short take-off and landing (STOL) airplane with a range of about 690 nm (720 statute miles). Max cruise is about 231 Knots (266 MPH), and can take-off and land on runways as short as 2,000 feet. Perfect for the short airstrip (3,000 feet at PID, let alone the south runway at FLL). Power is four Pratt And Whitney PT6A-50 turboprops, as 1,120 horsepower each. Enjoy!
