On September 12, 2012 my girlfriend and I took our 5th day trip just to fly on one of Delta's remaining DC-9 jets. Here is the engine start, taxi and takeoff aboard the DC-9-51 (N767NC) built in 1977. Also see my other videos as i filmed the landing with a pretty surprising ending! I was in seat 23A- the best combination of engine noise and view of the wings. 24A is "OK" too but a little too loud even for a P&W JT8D lover like me! The DC9 has to be one of the most well-built commercial airplanes ever built, and at 32-37 years old, i trust Delta's DC9-51's with my life. In case there's any question, it should be noted that the FAA has certified the airframe of the DC9 to withstand 100,000 cycles (takeoff and landings), and yes that's CYCLES (not hours). For comparison, the FAA has certified the 737 airframe to only 75,000 cycles, the 727 to only 60,000 cycles, the A320 to 48,000 cycles, and the 707 to only 20,000 cycles. What does this mean? It means that the DC9 is certified to take 100,000 flights without even so much as a crack to it's airframe. Flying 6 flights per day, every single day, that comes to 16,667 days, or 46 years. No other airplane in history can beat this record.
