Last summer, Donald Trump could do no wrong. What a difference a year makes. The summer of 2015 saw Trump generate so much early momentum behind his candidacy that he became almost unstoppable in his march towards the Republican presidential nomination. By Labor Day in early September, he had established a lead in the polls that rarely he relinquished. The summer of 2016, by contrast, may well have made him unelectable as he pursues the presidency itself. By Labor Day, he could be so far behind that Hillary Clinton, hardly a popular candidate herself, would have to trip badly for him to stage a comeback. Already, the polls point towards the first Democratic hat-trick of three consecutive victories in presidential elections since the 1940s. As Politico reported last week: "No candidate in Donald Trump's position at this stage of the campaign has gone on to win the popular vote in November in the modern polling era." Remember the days when Trump's stump speech was essentially a recitation of positive polls numbers? - is that he is running as if the nomination was still his goal rather than the presidency. Back then, no conspiracy theories about the polling numbers being manipulated - why would there be ? He was ahead. Now, that he is behind in polling for the Presidency, the numbers are deemed to be unreliable and the media is conspiring against him - that's the line Trump camp is taking. This is the sort of response Michael Cohen, one of Donald Trump's top advisers, gave when he went on CNN to talk about how his boss is great, the press and polls have got it all wrong and is totally going to win. The hilarity of the interview (on Cohen's part) is there for all to see. Cohen from the very start portrays himself (and the Trump) as victims of a conspiracy. Quality questions are presented to him by Brianna Keilar but Cohen objects to the wording and legitimacy of posing such questions - how dare she. It's the sort of questions that would be asked to any politician. For example, Ms Keilar asks Cohen about these now never ending negative polls that say the exact opposite of what he is expressing - but Cohen acts as if he has his fingers in his ears and singing "la-lal-la-la-la-la" - he was not having any of it - the polls are concocted in some sort of collective media conspiracy. Even to the objective viewer, they can see what sort of garbage a "Trumpeteer" comes out in response to quality questioning. Trump and his acolytes need to remove those chips from their shoulders - otherwise they are destined to live in the bubble of delusion only to be popped when H.Clinton is sworn in as President.
