England gain the point they need to qualify for the 1990 World Cup with a 0-0 draw away to Poland in October 1989. The Poles dominate much of the game, particularly in the first half, with veteran goalkeeper Peter Shilton frequently called into action. In the dying seconds England have a lucky escape when Poland strike the bar - subsequent results involving other teams mean England would have missed out on qualifying had they lost (they end up going through as one of the best second place teams).
