I loved this moment from my journeys in rural Chhattisgarh, India! Way outside the tourist zone is a small community of tattooed rebels called the Ramnami Samaj. Their story is interesting - they were once considered untouchables, outsiders, outcasts who are not even allowed to enter temples. One day, they all came together in an act of rebellion, collectivized, learned to read, and basically said “God does not only exist within your walls!” and tattooed “RAM”, or the name of God, all over their body - as a way of saying, “God is within me!” Now they read the Ramayana and have village satsangs and even developed their own traditional clothing and tattoo style!
