The founder of Village Story, Yu Ying, visited Guizhou’s Danzhai a decade ago. Attracted by the beauty of the local culture, she decided to turn locally produced artisanship into modern consumer goods, so as to save the endangered cultural relics amid the influx to cities on China’s southeastern coast. By creating local employment, parents are able to stay at home and accompany their children. Yu’s social enterprise also empowered Miao women and improved gender inequality in Danzhai.
