David Perry speaks with four "font fans": two students and two instructors with San Francisco's esteemed Letterform Archive (www.letterformarchive.org): Graham Bradley, James Edmondson, Kevin Barrett Kane and Morgan Prenger. From a fifteenth-century handmade Rothschild Book of Hours to psychedelic ’60s posters and the early pixelated digital type designs of the 1980s, Letterform Archive is a collection unparalleled in the Bay Area and unique across the world. Over its five-year history, Letterform Archive has welcomed over 10,000 visitors from 30 countries, including students, practitioners, and letterform admirers from every creative background. In April 2020, Letterform premiered its online archive, making the collection available free to anyone in the world – a project that coincided with the COVID-19 mandated lockdown but in the works for more than four years. Over the summer, another long-planned project came to fruition: a new, expanded state-of-the-art “brick and mortar” space at 2339 Third Street not far from their original home.
