Studio 31 Media Archive's video: KCBD NewsChannel 11 Daybreak Today Open and Promos 1 29 2021

@KCBD NewsChannel 11 Daybreak Today Open and Promos, 1/29/2021
News open and promos taken from the Friday, January 29, 2021 5am edition of Daybreak Today, the morning newscast on Lubbock's NBC affiliate owned by Gray Media Group. KCBD is one of the last stations to use Raycom's Limerick-designed blocks look as most of the former Raycom group has transitioned to one of Gray's in-house packages. The change at each station has coincided with an overhaul in technical infrastructure at each station in the group (consolidating separate master control and production control rooms into one, which is standard operating procedure for Gray; Gray's production control is also automated unlike Raycom; furthermore Gray uses VizRT while Raycom used Chyron). That change has not yet happened in Lubbock for good reason. Gray recently took over Fox affiliate KJTV and the rest of Ramar Communications' local TV properties (with Ramar retaining their radio stations and Albuquerque market TV stations). Gray bought all of Ramar's Lubbock TVs outright except KJTV which was sidecar'ed to SagamoreHill but is operated by Gray. I imagine right now Gray is in the planning stages of how to consolidate the two effectively (KJTV's building/transmitter site is shared with Ramar's radio stations while KCBD's co-located studio/transmitter is super-old and rather small for two stations). Do they expand one of the existing buildings (like they did in Rapid City)? Build a new facility from scratch? I recorded KJTV's morning open from the same day and I'll have more insight there. However once that consolidation has been done, then I imagine KCBD (and maybe KJTV) will receive new Gray looks. KCBD has long been the number one rated newscast in the South Plains. Their main anchor team of Abner Euresti, Karin McKay and chief meteorologist John Robison has been in place since 1983, with Euresti joining the station in the mid-70s and McKay joining Euresti on the anchor desk in 1980. While I appreciate the longevity, honestly I've just never cared for this station. I just find their format too dry for my liking. KJTV (before they were bought by Gray) and the Nexstar duopoly are better in my opinion. KJTV and KAMC are my favorites in the market. Also I am going to just say it straight: the brand "Daybreak Today" is stupid. Like they couldn't decide if they wanted to use "Daybreak" (which is what it was for the longest time) or "NewsChannel 11 Today" (like most NBC affiliates) so they went "why not both?" The voiceover is unknown but has been used by KCBD since the late 1990s, except for a brief period when they switched to Chris Clausen in the mid-2000s. After Clausen's death in 2008, they went back to this guy. He also does work for sister station WECT in Wilmington and Entercom News Radio station WBBM-AM in Chicago. Music is Canvas (with NBC chimes) from Stephen Arnold Music. The same exact cut is used on every single show. Daybreak Today is anchored by market stalwart Sharon Maines, who has worked in Lubbock news and media since 1974 and has been the morning/noon anchor at KCBD since 1995. She is joined by co-anchor Michael Cantu and meteorologist Steve Divine. Following the open are a few promos from this station. Nothing special about them, pretty standard promo fare for 2021. ©2021 Gray Television and KCBD-TV, no copyright infringement intended. For educational and historical purposes only.
