Studio 31 Media Archive's video: WXYZ 7 Action News at 7:00 Full 1 20 2021

@WXYZ 7 Action News at 7:00 (Full), 1/20/2021
Complete 7pm newscast from the Scripps-owned ABC affiliate (and former O&O) in Detroit, Michigan. Requested by Riley Smith. WXYZ has usually been the market leader, as is the case with ABC O&Os. Scripps took over in 1986 as ABC was forced to spin off some stations following their merger with CapCities. I guess I could see why stations like WTVD, KTRK and KFSN were retained over WXYZ (I think they were trying to keep an equal number of ABC O&Os and former CapCities stations) but I still feel like WXYZ should still be with ABC, like it's a station someone else really shouldn't be owning. Thankfully Scripps ran like an O&O pretty much until they began standardizing their stations in 2009. Scripps was able to retain that momentum when they took over until their ill-fated mid-2010s leadership began forcing corporate experiments on them (like "The Now"). This allowed WDIV to begin winning some timeslots on a consistent basis. WJBK has also carved a niche of its own. It's a very competitive market, especially with only a paltry three news producing stations in what's one of the largest markets in the country. I'm not going to lie, I only did this market as a request. I honestly find the Detroit market to be very boring for news. I'm not saying news doesn't happen there, but the stations there don't really interest me to be honest. Much like my home market, I don't think any of the stations there really put out that great of a product (with WJBK being the worst in my opinion, having a radio host co-anchor their morning news and hiring inexperienced talent from small markets, which seems to be the Fox way), and there's only three news stations due to CBS being forced onto the UHF graveyard following the Fox switch. This is Scripps' third largest market currently, eclipsed by Phoenix and Tampa Bay (they owned WPIX briefly but they're out of the picture now). However at one point, until the mid-2010s, this was in fact Scripps' largest market. Those two markets are faster growing as more people flee the north for warmer climates, and those two were able to eclipse Detroit. Everything here is about as standard Scripps as you can get, minus the voiceover. You have the much-derided Scripps graphics package here, Scripps music from Stephen Arnold, and Brian Lee voiceover. Anchored by Dave LewAllen and chief meteorologist Dave Rexroth. Includes a report from ABC's Alex Presha and an "UpFront" interview with Oakland University Political Science Professor Dave Dulio. Commercials are edited out, station promos have been retained. ©2021 E.W. Scripps Company and WXYZ-TV, no copyright infringement intended. For educational and historical purposes only.
