Studio 31 Media Archive's video: KLJB Fox 18 News at 9:00 Full 1 14 2021

@KLJB Fox 18 News at 9:00 (Full), 1/14/2021
Complete 9pm newscast on the Fox affiliate covering the Quad Cities of Illinois and Iowa, including Davenport, Bettendorf, Rock Island, and Moline. KLJB is owned by Mission but run by Nexstar. KLJB Fox 18 has the unique distinction of having all three local stations produce its primetime newscast for it at one point. Fox 18 Nine O'Clock News launched on December 31, 1999 and was originally produced by the original Independent News Network based in Davenport. The newscast was outsourced to INN because former owners Grant Broadcasting have never operated news departments ever. They were originally 30 minutes in length and aired nightly except Saturdays. In 2009, INN filed for chapter 7 bankruptcy and was liquidated to Fusion Communications who continued productions for most INN clients. In 2010, KLJB opted out of their agreement with INN and entered into a new one with ABC affiliate WQAD. On December 31, 2012, NBC affiliate KWQC took over production of the newscast. In December 2014, Nexstar took control of the former Grant stations. They retained the outsourced newscast in one market (Eau Claire-La Crosse) and launched new operations from scratch in the other two (Roanoke and Huntsville). However, since Nexstar already owned CBS affiliate WHBF, it was a foregone conclusion that they would eventually take over the production of KLJB's newscast. That happened December 31, 2015 (what is it with this station and launching newscasts on December 31st?). For that reason, Nexstar also doesn't legally own KLJB. It's owned currently by Mission Broadcasting but was originally shuffled off to minority-controlled sidecar Marshall Broadcasting at a time when the Obama-era FCC was trying to foster growth of minority-owned broadcasters. Marshall declared bankruptcy in 2019 after failing in an attempt to sue Nexstar. Basically, Marshall accused Nexstar of using them to gain favor with the Democratic-controlled FCC to complete the Grant and ComCorp purchases and then turning around and leaving Marshall out of making decisions for his stations, and witholding retransmission revenue. It should be noted Nexstar provided the financing to Marshall to complete the purchase. The stations were shuffled off to Mission Broadcasting last year (the company KMSS, KPEJ and KLJB were originally supposed to go to) and Marshall Broadcasting ceased to exist. The graphics are the old Look M package from NBC ArtWorks that was originally used throughout most of the Nexstar group before they bought Media General and inherited their contract with Linear Drift to design looks for them. Nexstar then ended its relationship with NBC ArtWorks and most of their stations began switching to the newer graphics. However that move has not been made in the Quad Cities. WHBF uses the same exact graphics. This package has not aged very well at all and the duopoly could definitely benefit from new graphics (and in WHBF's case new music). Music is Extreme from Stephen Arnold Music, voiceover Charlie Van Dyke. Anchored by Jim Niedelman and Ann Sterling, chief meteorologist Andy McCray, and sports director Jay Kidwell. Includes reports from Eric Zizich, Alliyah Sims, Cole Henke (WCIA), Jessi Turnure (Nexstar DC), David Lee Miller (Fox News), Dustin Nolan, and Jarek Andrzejewski. Commercials have been edited out, station promos were left in. NFL highlights during sports have been blacked out due to copyright restrictions. ©2021 Nexstar Inc. and KLJB-TV/WHBF-TV, no copyright infringement intended.
