Studio 31 Media Archive's video: WAND News at 5:00 Full 2 3 2022 New Graphics Set Music

@WAND News at 5:00 (Full), 2/3/2022 (New Graphics/Set/Music)
Complete 5pm newscast from WAND, the Block-owned NBC affiliate serving Central Illinois, based in Decatur but also covering Champaign-Urbana, Danville, and Springfield. Recorded on Thursday, February 3, 2022, the station's second day with the new look — this all debuted on Wednesday during the 4pm show. Everything here is a massive and much-needed upgrade over before. I will say that I think WAND looked at what WDRB in Louisville was doing and said, "we want that". Same music, similar graphics and logos, and a set that's likely from the same designer (Devlin). Their look before was a huge mess and they were overdue for something. WAND's newscast is fine for what it is. This whole market is strange, and like I said, nobody here really does market-wide coverage. WICS is solely focused on Springfield, WCIA focuses on Champaign-Urbana (they have a Springfield bureau that covers state political stories, but normal dayturns are not focused on Springfield), and WAND is mainly focused on Decatur, but will sometimes drive to Springfield since they're not that far from it. I would say all of the stations have fairly strong young reporters with some veteran weeknight anchors. Sean Streaty is the longest-running male anchor in the market currently on and he's pretty good. In the combined market, WAND is generally second overall, with WCIA continuing to dominate the ratings (despite the issues they had last year that hurt their perception in the community), and WICS placing third (they used to be a strong second but a combination of killing off WICD, their vets like Jerry Lambert and Gus Gordon leaving in favor of younger talent, and the "Code Red" controversy really hurt them). It could actually be said that WAND has benefited from not having any major controversy in the past couple of years unlike the others. As mentioned, music is now "This Is The Place" by Stephen Arnold Music, replacing "Aerial" (cue vomiting emojis lol). The opens no longer have a voiceover, but Lance Hildebrand remains the station's voiceover artist. Anchored by Sean Streaty and Dawn Sterling with weather from chief meteorologist Jim Kosek (yes, he's wearing athletic pants). There was no sports segment here, likely due to the severe snowstorm coverage. Includes reports from Olivianna Calmes, Doug Wolfe, and Alice Barr (NBC News). Commercials are edited out, station promos have been retained. ©2022 Block Communications and WAND-TV, no copyright infringement intended. For educational and historical purposes only.
