Studio 31 Media Archive's video: WHAS 11 Night Team Full 4 20 2022

@WHAS 11 Night Team (Full), 4/20/2022
Complete 11pm newscast from the TEGNA-owned ABC affiliate serving Louisville, Kentucky and southern Indiana. Originally on Wednesday, April 20, 2022 but recorded on the following day, Thursday, April 21, during their late night rebroadcast ahead of World News Now. This is an updated version of the TEGNA standardized package rolled out last year and was designed internally at TEGNA's Design Tank but based off of their 2018 Troika package. Music is still C Clarity from the French company Sixième Son, but the version here actually sounds decent because it lacks any vocals or sex noises like the main themes (yes, I had to go there, sorry, but that's what I think when I hear the main C Clarity themes). This is a more serious and aggressive version that fits the show well. There is no voiceover used in the open, but the station's primary imaging voice in promos is Ann DeWig. The anchor is Doug Proffitt and while he himself is a good anchor and one of the last veterans still left at this station, I'm not a fan of his reading style for this particular newscast. I think he is trying way too hard to come across as tabloid with how he reads some of the headlines. Actually, this whole newscast is just weird: it's a mix of tabloid and Trendy TEGNA™ and those two things just don't mix well if you ask me. WHAS had a much better product under Belo and that has changed under the current ownership because this is one of the stations that has felt more compelled to experiment with their newscasts (their morning show is not watchable). That might be fine in other markets where the station is dead last but Louisville is a market that punches well above its weight because the stations have usually had good owners (pre-consolidation) that have invested into them. WHAS was not a ratings laggard (usually second and sometimes first) until TEGNA came in and made their changes, and now WDRB and WLKY (both of who used to rate terribly) have really come in and kicked WHAS' behind because their products and teams are stronger than what WHAS is doing. The two positive things TEGNA did do right were to finally go HD (I'll admit Belo kinda did forget about them because they were kinda isolated from their Texas and Northwest clusters) and finally get them a new set because the old one aged terribly and looked horrible. They also get credit for still maintaining their video archive, which is made use of in the first report. Sadly, most stations have long thrown theirs out (or donated them to outside organizations like universities or libraries, which is great because it gets digitized). It's not the worst I've seen, but for obvious reasons, WHAS is my least favorite station in this market where all of the stations do punch above their market size (I would think Louisville is a top 35 market because they've always acted like it). Anchored by Doug Proffitt, weather from chief meteorologist Ben Pine, and sports director Kent Spencer. Includes reports from Grace McKenna, Bobbi McSwine, and Morgan Norwood (ABC News). Commercials are edited out, station promos are retained. Most sports highlights were blacked out due to copyright restrictions. ©2022 Tegna Media and WHAS-TV, no copyright infringement intended.
