Studio 31 Media Archive's video: WDFX Fox 34 News at 9:00 Full 11 30 2020

@WDFX Fox 34 News at 9:00 (Full), 11/30/2020
Full length 9pm newscast from the Fox affiliate in Dothan, Alabama. WDFX is owned by Lockwood Broadcasting and Nexstar ABC affiliate WDHN produces the newscast. In January 2019, Lockwood officially became the new owners of WDFX taking over from Raycom Media. Raycom was bought out by Gray in 2018 and since they have owned WTVY since 2002, and they are the market's number one station, no way Gray was going to keep WDFX over WTVY. Since they were forced to sell off the overlapping stations, WDFX and three other Fox affiliates in markets Gray already operates in went to Lockwood, who Gray has done business with before. WDFX did not offer news programming of any kind until 2008, when then-sister station WSFA in Montgomery began producing a new 9pm show that was seen on both WDFX and Montgomery Fox affiliate WCOV. In 2012, WCOV canceled their contract with WSFA and entered into a new one with CBS affiliate WAKA. WSFA continued producing a 9pm show now called "The News at Nine" that was simulcast on WDFX and WSFA's Bounce TV subchannel. This lasted until June 1, 2020 when Lockwood entered into an agreement with Nexstar to allow WDHN in Dothan and WMBB in Panama City to produce new hour-long 9pm newscasts for their stations in those markets. These newscasts are weeknight only, but apparently do air on holidays. WDFX uses the regular WDHN team for anchoring, with reporters and retired met Oscar Fann filling in as needed (WDHN does not produce weekend newscasts). However, WPGX/WDFX do use separate graphics and music and aside from the mic flags, there is no mention of WDHN (surprised running promos for WDHN news wasn't part of the deal like it seems to be on many outsourced Fox affiliate newscasts). The music is "Inergy" from Stephen Arnold and the voiceover is John French (station voice of WDFX). The graphics are the standard Nexstar Fox package from Linear Drift. Anchored by Mike Gurspan, meteorologist Oscar Fann (in for Matthew Wine one more night), and sports anchor Michael Rinker. Includes reports from Allison Fox O'Connor, Sara Wilson, Casey Stegall (Fox News), Anna Wiernicki (Nexstar DC), Mike Emanuel (Fox News), and Jeff Sanders (Nexstar Montgomery Reporter). There's also a feature story from Gurspan. I kind of wish Mike Gurspan and Oscar Fann were the regular anchors. These two have a great chemistry on-air. I actually want to see more of these two together. Though I'm sure Oscar Fann is enjoying retirement (he used to be WDHN's morning meteorologist before retiring a couple years back, but does fill-in work regularly, as WDHN does not produce news on the weekends). Commercials are edited out, station promos have been retained. ©2021 Lockwood Broadcast Group, WDFX-TV, Nexstar Inc. and WDHN-TV, no copyright infringement intended.
