Studio 31 Media Archive's video: KTUU Alaska s News Source at 10:00 Full 1 27 2022

@KTUU Alaska's News Source at 10:00 (Full), 1/27/2022
Complete 10pm newscast from the NBC affiliate in Anchorage, Alaska that's owned by Gray Media Group. This show was recorded on Thursday, January 27, 2022. Requested (multiple times) by James Stump. KTUU is basically the only legitimate television news operation in Anchorage after buying its main competitor, KTVA (minus the license) in 2020, and consolidating the teams. This means that KTUU has a much larger team than most other Gray stations do for this size market, and that they have no competition. The ABC operation, which has one show a day at 10pm, is a joke with news out of Wyoming/Michigan with very little local content shot by like one or two photogs who do remain in Anchorage. So this is really the only legitimate news operation there. Combined with Gray's Fairbanks operation that they forget they own, and Gray basically has a monopoly on local television news in the state of Alaska. It's both scary and sad, as I strongly dislike Gray and it's unfortunate the people of Anchorage at least do not have a second choice. However, from what I understand, KTVA was consistently losing money despite GCI's massive investment into building a full-scale news operation after purchasing the station from MediaNews Group, a newspaper company that basically didn't care about them and barely cared about the newspapers they owned as it was. GCI made cuts in its later years but it wasn't enough. KTUU is one of the most dominant operations in the entire country and has been since at least the 1980s, so it was no surprise someone would throw in the towel. ABC has already been an afterthought and gave up trying to compete not long after Coastal bought it from Smith Media as they were liquidating their assets in the early 2010s. KTUU used to brand as "Channel 2 News" but since 2020, now brands as "Alaska's News Source", which was their slogan before. The shows are also simulcast on the CBS affiliate in the market, KAUU, the former KYES that changed its call letters last year and became the new CBS affiliate after Gray legally couldn't purchase KTVA due to already having a duopoly. The whole "Alaska's Source" theme also translates to weather and sports as well, where those segments are branded as "Alaska's Weather Source" and "Alaska's Sports Source" respectively. The product is OK for what it is, if not a little too dry (like KFDA in Amarillo). Gray's stuff is just WAY too traditional and while it might work in the linear ratings where the majority of the audience prefers an old fashioned news presentation, I can't imagine the younger audience really caring for this. A little personality and some lighter or more relatable content would be nice. As a millennial who doesn't regularly watch TV news aside from this channel, I can't say this is compelling enough to make me want to watch. KTUU Is also anchor heavy and I believe every weeknight show has a different female anchor next to the primary male, Mike Ross, who was off this evening. The combined operation is based out of KTUU's studios, which are around the same age as KTVA's now-old facility, as they both moved in around the same time frame. The only difference is that they took out KTUU's original desk and replaced it with the desk from KTVA's set since it lacks station branding. Graphics in the open are a heavily modified and truncated version of the old Giant Octopus 2006 WISH-TV graphics they used to use, but that's only in the open. In the actual show, they use one of the standard Gray packages, unfortunately. Music is still "The Tower V.5" from Warner Chappell Production Music, and unfortunately, it does not work here. Not to mention, they use that same one cut here for everything. I am surprised they are able to get away with using NBC music on a show that also airs on CBS, but I guess WCPM doesn't care as long as the royalty payments clear. Don't know who the voiceover is, but he's a major downgrade over who they had before. Anchored by Beth Verge with weather from meteorologist Joe Bartosik, and Jordan Rodenberger covers sports. Includes reports from Patrick Enslow and Lexi Yelverton (NATS package, so no track from the reporter). Commercials were edited out, station promos and IDs are retained. A CBS Newspath package was edited out due to copyright concerns. ©2022 Gray Media Group and KTUU-TV, no copyright infringement intended. For educational and historical purposes only.
