Complete 11pm newscast from the CBS affiliate serving South Bend, Indiana and Michiana that's owned by Sinclair. Recorded on Saturday, February 5, 2022. This station is most notable for being the former flagship of the former Schurz Communications, which gradually exited the mass media business over the last decade. The company, based in South Bend, once held print (South Bend Tribune), radio (WSBT-AM and WNSN-FM) and TV assets in its home market that gave it the market's dominant cluster. All of that has been broken up with the paper now under Gannett, radio under Mid-West Family Broadcasting, and TV under Sinclair, with TV being the only Schurz station not acquired by Gray when that company bought the TV group in 2015. Gray traded WSBT to Sinclair in exchange for WLUC due to Gray already owning WNDU and needing to divest a station as FCC ownership regulations necessitated that. TV and radio still share a building and transmitter site, despite the separate ownership, but no longer a content partnership. Despite entering the Sinclair fold in 2015, WSBT took until 2020 to adopt the company's corporate on-air look and sound, and they still have their Schurz-era set. The implementation of the graphics isn't exactly the best — the station tried to mix the old and new looks in terms of font sizes in the opens, old graphics still being used in weather backgrounds etc. and it just looks gaudy. Their promos do look pretty good for a smaller market station, so maybe the creative services department's priorities are in the wrong place? With all of that now in place, graphics are pretty much what you see on every Sinclair station. Music is the standard Sinclair theme from Warner-Chappell Production Music, and Glenn Hansen is the station voiceover artist. Product is the market's second best in my opinion (with WBND being better) but is usually first in the ratings. Content and story selection is good and talent is also good. The station has always tried to act like they're in a bigger market than they are and that surprisingly continues under Sinclair, which has largely let the station do its own thing aside from must-runs, given its strong ratings. One of Sinclair's biggest achievements in the market was getting Fox from WSJV in 2016 and sticking it on WSBT's .2 channel. This was mainly done as Quincy desired to get out of its JSA/SSA with Sinclair in Peoria, something neither company entered into but inherited from companies they bought (Sinclair buying Barrington and Quincy buying most of the former Granite assets). Sinclair sold the ABC affiliation in Peoria to Quincy in exchange for Fox in South Bend, with both former ABC affiliate WHOI in Peoria and WSJV being turned into the useless diginet farms that they are now.
