Studio 31 Media Archive's video: WOWT 6News Live at 10:00 Full 1 27 2022

@WOWT 6News Live at 10:00 (Full), 1/27/2022
Complete 10pm newscast from the Gray-owned NBC affiliate in Omaha, Nebraska. They also serve Council Bluffs, Iowa. This show was recorded on Thursday, January 27, 2022. I have no particular reason for recording this other than the fact I like the cuts of 360 they use in this open. I've also always admired the Omaha market. It's one that has stations that have always punched above their market size, maybe with the exception of KMTV and the KPTM in the past decade. KETV and WOWT still feel higher market than they are and I attribute that to their past owners: Pulitzer and Chronicle, for investing in their stations. WOWT still doesn't feel as "Gray-like" of a station as most. They have lost some of their veterans over the years, but that was bound to happen anyway regardless of who owned the place. They still have a few longtimers like John Knicely and Mike McKnight, and some of the newer talent that has been hired are solid. I find this product to be good for what it is. Not as good as KETV, but KETV is a strong competitor. WOWT used to be the market leader, but these days is a comfortable second behind KETV. Graphics are the usual Gray stuff which has animations end abruptly in the open as a new one starts. Nothing particularly impressive about them. Music is 360 by Stephen Arnold Music. For voiceovers, longtime station voice Charlie Van Dyke has been demoted to promos only (probably because he's still under contract and they're trying to burn off the contract, but they wanted to make a change because they know his voice isn't as sharp as it once was). Brian Lee now does all of their opens and an occasional promo here and there, probably as they work him in to eventually replace CVD full time. Their set is pretty old and is a heavily refreshed version of the standard-issue 2000s Gray set. I understand they are expanding into an adjacent building, so a new set is likely in the works. I also understand this is the third phase of a studio improvement project at Gray where three stations are getting new or expanding facilities, and that has taken a lot longer than it should have because Gray is too busy buying other companies. WMTV and WRDW already debuted their new buildings (with WRDW after about a four or five year delay) with WOWT being the last part. But they are not getting an entirely new building, just expanding into existing space next door. They probably cheapened out after seeing that they probably don't have the money anymore after they blew it on buying Raycom and Meredith. At the time, they were practicing distanced seating, probably due to Omicron. Anchored by John Knicely and Lauren Taylor with weather from chief meteorologist Emily Rohler, and Brent Weber covers sports. Includes reports from Marlo Lundak, Sandra Jones (InvestigateTV), and Mike McKnight. Commercials were edited out, station promos and IDs are retained. Some sports highlights were blacked out due to copyright restrictions. ©2022 Gray Media Group and WOWT-TV, no copyright infringement intended. For educational and historical purposes only.
