Studio 31 Media Archive's video: KFXV Fox News Rio Grande Valley Full 2 10 2022

@KFXV Fox News Rio Grande Valley (Full), 2/10/2022
Full length 9pm newscast from the Fox affiliate serving the Rio Grande Valley in South Texas, along the Mexican border. Communities served by the station in this sprawling market include McAllen, Brownsville, Harlingen, Edinburg, Weslaco, Rio Grande City, and South Padre Island. Entravision Communications owns the station. This show was recorded on Thursday, February 10, 2022. A lot of what was said about the Laredo newscast I uploaded the other night applies here too. It's a newscast that definitely prioritizes style over substance. The talent on this station, point blank, is hired for looks over ability, and that has been the case for them since the early 2010s. And while television is a visual medium and many stations do factor physical appearance in on-air hiring decisions, most are not as blatant as this. The set itself also looks very nice, reminiscent of many of the newer Univision O&O sets. It's probably the same designer, and it's like Entravision blew all the money they saved laying people off and closing production in the adjacent markets to the RGV on it. The McAllen facility now also produces newscasts for Laredo (both Fox and Univision) and Corpus Christi (just Univision there) as well. Entravision has moved to this hubbing model over the past few years to cut costs, and similar "production hubs" also exist in El Paso, Denver, and San Diego. The Fox RGV and KNVO shows are done live while the others are pre-recorded for playback at their proper times in the other markets. There are more local reports and reporters here compared to Laredo's, for obvious reasons. As I said in the KXOF video, the staff that produces these mainly work on the Univision shows and for lack of a better term, it shows. Some of the talent's accents are so thick it is hard to understand at times, which is not ideal for a newscast in which being able to understand the information being conveyed quickly and clearly is quite important. The hodgepodge of graphics that were all over the place in the Laredo newscast are seen here as well. You have some of the Univision graphics for weather, for two boxes, full screens on the monitor behind the anchor, and transitions. Every segment has a stinger (with music), which is kind of useless and slows the newscast down. Graphics appear to be bought off of VideoHive.net, and music is a production track from Universal Production Music entitled "The Real Authority". A random cut of the OSI Fox Affiliate News Theme lives on in the close. The opens do not have a voiceover, and the station doesn't have a voiceover artist contracted to them either, using various station staffers where needed. In the last KFXV newscast I uploaded back in 2020, then-news director Angel Covarrubias was doing most of their voiceovers. With him now gone (and now the ND at Houston CW affiliate KIAH), his voiceovers have been completely scrubbed from the station. Speaking of the last KFXV newscast I uploaded back in 2020, all of this (music/graphics) was updated sometime last year. Turnover is also high here and anchors change frequently. None of the anchors in my 2020 video are there anymore (and one of them, Jonathan Cotto, is actually in my market now at KSAT as a reporter). The high turnover could be because Entravision isn't really that great of a company and pays poorly from what I understand. The Fox side is also the red-headed stepchild of the duopoly compared to KNVO, and they do tend to keep talent there. One thing that annoys me is that the anchors mispronounce "Grande" in Rio Grande Valley — in English, the "e" is silent (so it should sound like "Rio Grand Valley" when spoken aloud). Anchored by Thalia Gonzalez and Robin Gwenn, who also anchors weather. Magali Vega anchors sports. Includes reports from Kayla Herrera (in front of a blank wall, why? — that stand up was useless), Alondra De Hoyos, Kimberly Meza, Mandy Gaither (CNN Newsource), and CJ Papa (Fox News). Commercials were edited out, station promos and IDs are retained. Most sports highlights have been blacked out due to copyright issues. ©2022 Entravision Communications and KFXV-TV, no copyright infringement intended. For educational and historical purposes only.
