Studio 31 Media Archive's video: KNDU KNDO NBC Right Now Local News 11@11 Full 1 26 2022

@KNDU/KNDO NBC Right Now Local News 11@11 (Full), 1/26/2022
Complete 11pm newscast from the combined NBC affiliate covering the Yakima/Tri-Cities, Washington market. The stations are owned by Cowles Media out of Spokane, Washington and are pretty much semi-satellites of KHQ these days. This was recorded from the KNDU Richland/Pasco/Kennewick feed on Wednesday, January 26, 2022. All newscasts originate from the KNDU facilities in Kennewick (which used to be a funeral home). They were the first station in the market to close their separate, full-functioning facility in Yakima right when the recession began to hit in 2008 and consolidate operations in the larger Tri-Cities area (KAPP – whose old Yakima studios were literally right next door to KNDO's, would follow suit not long after) while maintaining a small bureau in Yakima to keep local content included in the Tri-Cities-produced shows. They and KAPP, who also has a small bureau in Yakima now, still do a decent job of including Yakima content in the market-wide shows. Wikipedia considers the Yakima stations to be the "main" stations in the market with the Tri-Cities stations being "semi-satellites", and prior to the recession, that was indeed the case. But since the closing of separate, full-functioning Yakima studios in favor of just operating of the Tri-Cities, it could be said that those stations are the primary ones in the market now. In any case, those studios just run local news production and sales, with actual master control for all of the stations coming out of the market (Spokane for NBC and ABC; Seattle for CBS). I believe NBC is rated second in the market behind the Sinclair CBS operation (the only one who still has a full Yakima studio and Yakima-originated broadcasts on weekday evenings) but I'd say their product is a bit more watchable. It's not my favorite in the market, and you can tell they have a super small team these days, but they try. They've made a lot of cuts recently and rely on Spokane for weekend news currently and for fill-in weather. I get the need to use a unified branding for the two stations, but "NBC Right Now" is not a good one. It's kind of clunky and doesn't make too much sense. Calling the whole station "NBC" would be an improvement ("NBC Local News" has a good ring to it; "NBC Right Now Local News" is way too wordy). They are trying to play off their longtime "Right Now" slogan in use since Cowles took over in 2000 (and which KHQ also uses), but again, it just doesn't work here. Speaking of Spokane, the station uses the same music ("The Rock" from Stephen Arnold Music), graphics (I believe they were done by a guy out of Reno but can't recall his name right now) and voiceover (Jim Birdsall) as KHQ does upstate. KNDU/KNDO also have random cuts of The NBC Collection still lying around which they use in closes and in bumps. Anchored by Scott Daniels, with weather from weather anchor Stacy Lee, and sports is anchored by Jamie Council. Includes reports from Sophia Lesseos, one from Council, and Tom Costello (NBC News). Station promos were left in, commercials were edited out. ©2022 Cowles Company and KNDU-TV, no copyright infringement intended. For educational and historical purposes only.
