Racially restrictive covenants were legally binding clauses inserted into the deeds of homeowners, and also used by land developers. These clauses strictly prohibited whites from selling, renting, subleasing, transferring, and bequeathing any homes or form of real estate to "Negros". This practice started in the late 1890s and continued into the 1940s. Several entities within the District of Columbia participated in this SYSTEMIC OPPRESSION of African Americans that helped exacerbate the racial wealth gap during that era.
