This falls under Don't be scared, be prepared. Know what to do when gas is detected. If you smell heavy gas, Shut off your main line to the house, this is done at the meter / where the gas enters your home. PREPPERS make note .. Always have a tool (pliers, wrench etc) by the gas line ... make SURE the tool is pre-placed to do this, in cases of earthquakes for instance, have a tool easily accessible which can reach the shut off valve. MAKE SURE YOU AND YOUR LOVED ONES / Roommates / Co-workers know where the gas meter is, and where the valve is BEFOREHAND!! This afternoon , I smelled a pungent rotten egg odor in throughout my entire basement, called the emergency number for our local gas company, they arrived within 1 hour. Turns out our gas meter was leaking fairly heavily. They also checked the rest of our home lines for leaks, turning up a smaller leak where the gas meets the furnace. Both fixed. New meter at no cost to us, and a tightening of the gas line in the furnace. The gas worker informed me, explosions occur when gas buildup occurs, too much natural gas in an enclosed space, and an ignition source, will lead to these large explosions we're seeing around the country. The gas worker said he was not aware of any series of explosions anywhere when I asked him. :( (no surprise, since Im basically the only person in the world keeping track of explosions right now).
