@Steve Kaufmann on Experiential Language Learning: It's all about compelling input
This video is a recording of a workshop on what Steve Kaufmann calls "Experiential Language Learning". He gave this presentation to a group of educators, professors, highschool and middle school teachers at St. Andrew's School in Middletown, DE on April 17, via skype from Vancouver, Canada. He uses an input based approach to teach himself languages. Steve Kaufmann is a polyglot who speaks 13 languages. He has a blog at lingq.com and a language learning platform that will be a game-changer for any motivated learner who wishes to acquire a second language and eventually reach fluency. It has been four weeks since my students began using lingq.com for their daily reading and listening tasks for me, and unquestionably lingQ has already begun to reap considerable results for them. It is a comprehensible input based platform with a large library of readings for beginners, intermediates and advanced learners in which the interface allows for the matching up of sound and text, as well as the ability to import your own lessons directly, and have them up and running almost instantaneously. LingQ is also a language learning community in which the members share their expertise of their own languages with each other. Members skype in the language with native speakers. LingQ currently supports and has members in Chinese, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Arabic, Norwegian, Romanian, English, Korean, Swedish, Arabic, Czech, Hebrew, and new languages (beta languages) continue to be added. If you are a TPRSer you are going to want to watch this video because if you are interested in creating comprehensible input rich reading and listening experiences for your students you will want to check this out and take a look at the lingQ interface and what Steve Kaufmann has created. You can see Stephen Krashen's elegant and powerful language acquisition theory put into practice. My students feel a sense of empowerment when they read my stories and readings on LingQ. There is nothing more empowering for a young person (or any age) than to discover their own capacity to become a resilient, independent learner. (During the Q & A session, there is a brief interaction with Stephen Krashen who was also in attendance)
