greetings Doom connoisseurs, today i play a favorite map from the massively scoped, one-of-the-kind, never fully completed Doom set Voyager by Russian Doom Mixtape all-star BeeWen. this set is maximalist as hell - the scale and scope of every level of this set is far beyond what you'd ever except from a typical Doom wad (unless you're talking about a single-level release), and i honestly have trouble even thinking of it as a Doom wad because the environments are mostly not what you'd associate with Doom. there are also some custom sprites that add to that feeling. i'll also be revisiting another map from this set - my favorite one from the set - in a later episode. i frantically navigate around a large desert with trenches, entering various buildings to find switches and talk some about the Russian Doom community's output from the early 2010's and their propensity for open-ended exploration maps. i also talk about my conversations with BeeWen and popular Russian mapper Lainos when i wrote my article on ALT, and more! this is the third of four desert-themed levels early in the set, and is probably the most open-ended of them. several different kinds of environments are explored in later maps - more dark castle themed maps, ones on the moon, swamp, and aquatic maps. the play is some kind of combination between combat-heavy doom and environmental puzzles in extremely, complex, non-linear environments that will astound and frustrate you in equal parts. each map takes a really long time to complete the first time through, so this set can be a little bit of an exhausting ordeal than lacks the variety of sizes and design approaches of something like ALT.
