hullo! in this video i use the excuse of the inevitable Doom Eternal release to begin examining in three parts a both loved and hated set from the Doom community known as Eternal Doom. Eternal Doom is in many ways a 90's relic: its wide open castle settings and it's large and often intensely switch-hunting maps are indicative of the time, and many aspects of the set are as brilliant and singular as they can shamefully cheesy and dated. it was released over three different iterations in 1996/1997 by Team Eternal/Team TNT. Darkdome, Map 12, is probably it's most well-remembered map: a moody monastery on a floating island with puzzle elements. it's by returning Doom Mixtape alum, Norwegian artist and designer extraordinaire, Sverre Kvernmo. Sverre would go on to work as a designer in the game industry for several years after (and much more recently, return to Doom mapping).
