When you’re on a date, there are certain things that are better left unsaid. For example, it’s probably a good idea to avoid mentioning sex, violence, or anything grotesque, even if it’s work-related. Anything in these areas will trigger a person’s fight-or-flight response system and cause them to become guarded and judgmental. Practice the “show me don’t tell me” philosophy and avoid directly stating behavioral qualities about yourself (i.e. “I’m nice,” “I always,” “I’m smart,” “I did this,” “I did that”). Let your date reach their own conclusions about your character. Asking questions is a wonderful way to avoid over-sharing. You also want to try to stay positive even if it feels unnatural. Everything in dating becomes magnified. If you only have an hour to speak with your date, consider the fact that he or she will form a complete opinion about you in a short sixty minutes. If you spend half of this time, a casual thirty minutes, using sarcasm or discussing negative subjects, your date will assume that your life is depressing and they won’t want to spend theirs with you. You always want to paint a picture of what your date’s life would be like if he or she were a part of yours. That’s why it is great to discuss things like attending sporting events, concerts, drawing, cooking, gardening, etc. This a subtle way of generating interest about less-pronounced aspects of your character. You also want to replace conversations about work--that your date may not understand--with conversations about your hobbies and interests--they are much more fascinating and relatable. And now you know what to avoid discussing during your first or second date conversations.
