In the Great Driving Roads series: expressways edition, we will explore India's new highways. We are starting with the Samruddhi Mahamarg, currently the longest expressway in Maharashtra. This 701 km six-lane highway, expandable to eight lanes, connects Mumbai to Nagpur. When fully complete, it will reduce travel time between the two cities from 16 to 8 hours. Costing ₹55,000 crore, it traverses six wildlife sanctuaries, featuring nine bridges and 17 underpasses for animal movement. For this journey, we have the Hyundai Tucson with us. Key highlights of the Tucson include Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) — adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist and lane change assist. The Tucson has a 183bhp, 416Nm, 2-litre turbo-diesel engine, which is more than adequate on a highway like this.
