There is value in showing both the struggle and the success. Books that tell stories with zero conflicts don’t sell. We are way more interesting a read than our expected chapters on climax and conflict resolution — people want our imperfections— to turn our pages, write marginalia in the adjacent space by our spine, and highlight the parts with our struggles because there is tremendous value when we give context to our narrative. We crave to recognize ourselves in others, seeing that others are also imperfect is immensely humanizing. Conversely, when we perceive a life so “perfect,” in comparison to ours, we cannot connect, we hurt for recognition, our struggle starves to be seen outside of itself and thus validated as a part of the natural human condition. In other words: A 'Table of Contents,' with no context, is no table for you to seek out my company — find me with my feet sinking into your footnotes and my imagination indexing your references. Don’t feel the need to filter your story — just share your truth. When you live your truth nobody can use your truth against you.
