Kedarnath is a located at a height of 11,755ft in the Indian state of . Apart from being one of the 12 -- the holiest sites dedicated to Shiva where he exhibited his wisdom; jyoti means light and lingam is the phallus, the symbol denoting the creative force, which is Shiva -- it is one of the four pilgrimage sites on the , i.e., the pilgrimage to the four most important shrines in the . In Sanskrit, kedara means fields, natha means lord; Kedarnath, therefore, means the lord of the fields. Although the exact date of construction of the temple is disputed, mythological accounts state that the temple was built by the brothers after the Kurukshetra War described in the Hindu epic Mahabharata. A definitive account about the history of the temple belongs to the 12th century called the -kalpataru written by . The temple can be reached after an arduous 16km trek/pony-ride/palanquin-ride from ; a helicopter service is also available. The Kedarnath town was almost entirely destroyed in the , but the town is being reconstructed slowly yet surely. Miraculously, while the entire town was destroyed and thousands of lives were lost, the temple itself received almost no damage. By reasons beyond logic, a huge boulder rolled down a mountain and lodged exactly behind the temple, protecting it from the force of water gushing down. This video was shot on 10 May 2018 when Kedarnath town was abuzz with activity. It is one of those few places where ordinary devotees and rub shoulders. Given the inclement nature of weather in the Himalayas, the temple is accessible to devotees only during the months of April-November. It is said that during the rest of the year, gods worship Shiva at Kedarnath and no humans are allowed.
