The 14th lecture for GEO 322 Surface Processes at Oregon State University on Oct. 22, 2018 begins the discussion of stability and failure of shallow mobile regolith layers on infinite slopes. The problem is treated, first, as a force balance with discussion of the various forces, and second, as a balance of shear stress and shear strength in the slope-parallel direction. Finally, the factor of safety equation is introduced.
