@Science Vlog: Power Supply Mods for Using a Tesla Model S Battery Module with the Oregon RFID Reader
I recorded this video pre-COVID, waited for my new Mac to do the editing. Bureaucratic red tape kept the Mac from getting added to the OSU network right away, and then we all had to stay at home for like a year. Finally re-discovered the footage today and made the time to edit the video. The video describes my modification of the Oregon RFID reader to allow the use of a battery with a fully charged voltage greater than the reader can tolerate. The mods allow me to use a salvaged battery module from a Tesla Model S. When fully charged, the module voltage is over 25 V, and the reader can't take over 24 V. I used the following: - Salvaged battery modules (2) from Tesla Model S on eBay - Voltage-dependent shutdown circuit from Electronics Salon on Amazon; - DC-DC buck converter, switch-mode power supply (SMPS) from Drok on Amazon - Power filter from Oregon RFID - Charger for Model S module from Solar Genie I included a little timelapse video of me putting in the new battery and installing the modified reader to the tune of Coolidge by Descendents.
