@CTL 9B - Assisted Migration of California's Giant Conifers to Puget Sound for the Children
This is the second installment in the Redwood/Sequoia theme (episode 9) of the ongoing "Climate, Trees, and Legacy" video series, by retired science writer Connie Barlow. This half-hour video is filmed on location at four sites along the coast of Puget Sound in the State of Washington. 00:24 First site: September 2016, Connie introduces this video while standing alongside a young Giant Sequoia, planted on private property on the Olympic Peninsula. At timecode 03:38 Torreya Guardians is the example of using old landscaping "assisted migration" of an endangered Florida tree species to assess (a) ability to thrive and naturalize northward and (b) non-invasiveness in recipient ecosystem. 05:18 Second site: October 2016, Connie films a set of 20-year-old Giant Sequoia trees thriving on church property on the Olympic Peninsula. At timecode 11:18 she films her husband, Rev. Michael Dowd, telling church kids the story of the Sequoia trees. Correction: I have since learned that while rainfall in Sequim WA is 13 inches, Port Angeles gets about 42 inches, while the small Sequoia in the first scene is at a spot halfway bt the two, hence about 24 inches. 13:48 Third: December 2016, Connie prepares seed packets of Sequoiadendron and Metasequoia to give to Seattle's Plant-for-the-Planet kids, who will be planting 5 sapling Coast Redwoods (clones of the biggest trees) given to the City of Seattle by the Archangel Ancient Tree Archive. 18:48 Fourth: The following day, excerpts are shown of the presentations made at the Jefferson Park, Seattle, redwood planting ceremony. 2 Plant-for-the-Planet speakers, Athena Fain (19:04 and 22:54) and Caroline Heege (21:54); Philip Stielstra (19:24 Archangel Ancient Tree Archive, Seattle volunteer); and Connie Barlow (23:21). Also shown at 26:37 are kids planting trees. Note: 18 months later, Seattle Times reported that Stielstra begins another planting of 100 Coast Redwood (6-foot tall) trees. This time, he is seeking a single location to create an entire forest for the future: "100 Redwoods Are On Their Way to a Seattle Man": https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/environment/100-redwoods-in-search-of-a-forest-seattle-man-looking-for-a-home-for-ancient-tree-archive/ The video concludes, 27:06, with a facetime blog by Connie (August 2017) reporting on the results thus far of the tree planting. Her own experience, as founder of Torreya Guardians, is that when baby trees fail to thrive in their migrated zone, this provides important lessons for ultimately discerning the best microclimates, plant associations, level of shade or sunlight, and season for planting migrated trees. Successful plantings in the future depend on a series of failures in the beginning that "help us learn best practices."
