[PLEASE READ] Gail is an attractive (and alluring) high-school “sweater girl” in her first appearance as an actress in a motion picture—HENRY ALDRICH GETS GLAMOUR (1943). Jimmy Lydon reprises his “Coming, Mother!” title role in this entertaining entry in the “Henry Aldrich” film series of the 1940s. The movie is strewn with a number of amusing bits of comedy “business.” Viewers will also find bemusing the small-town provincialism depicted in the film. In spite of her personal hang-ups, Gail is dreamy in her role of “Virginia Lowry,” her line readings, at times, curiously reminiscent of future co-star John Wayne’s style. Actress Frances Gifford (“Jungle Girl”) also impresses as the “Dorothy-Lamour-ish” Hollywood actress with whom the smitten Henry unwittingly becomes romantically linked. Actress Diana Lynn (as Henry’s neglected girlfriend Phyllis) would later be teamed successfully with Gail in two Paramount comedies: OUR HEARTS WERE YOUNG AND GAY (1944) and OUR HEARTS WERE GROWING UP (1946). GETS GLAMOUR is a chuckler, though Lydon’s whiny characterization is certainly an acquired taste.
