@KEN CURTIS: SERENADE FOR A “LITTLE COWGIRL”
[PLEASE READ] Another fine song contribution by the master Western vocalist to Hollywood cinema. Such sweet and simple charm is timeless, exceptional, and grand. In character as “Curt Durant,” Ken serenades an unidentified little girl in COWBOY BLUES (1946). Bypassed leading lady Jean Marie “Jeff” Donnell—in character as "Susan Nelson"—is surprised she is not the object of Ken’s attentions. The song “Little Cowgirl” was composed by Ken Curtis and Dink Rogers. “Lest we forget”: Ken Curtis’s long and legendary association with the unkempt “hick” role of “Festus Haggen” in TV’s “GUNSMOKE” unfortunately obscures his earlier work as a heroic, crooning leading man. With his warm, intelligent demeanor and pearly voice raised eloquently in song, he made more than half a dozen Columbia Westerns in this more distinguished or “clean-cut” vein, often teamed with Guinn “Big Boy” Williams and the ingenious, novelty musical troupe The Hoosier Hotshots.
