This is an excerpt from the lecture "Prayer of the Prophet" by Sheikh Mumtaz Ul Haq. In this short segment, Sheikh talks about the reason why not reciting Fatiha is not only VALID BUT proven by Sahih narrations and sunnah of the sahabah. Many well known people like Dr Zakir Naik give the impression that to recite behind the imam is in Bukhari and is sahih but he fails to give a full picture. This lecture will only be useful to people with an open mind and not those that have become immune to other opinions apart from their select few scholars and books. ------Proof-------- 1) وَإِذَا قُرِىءَ الْقُرْآنُ فَاسْتَمِعُواْ لَهُ وَأَنصِتُواْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ .(الأعراف، 204) So, when the Qur'an is recited, listen to it, and be silent that you may receive mercy. (Quran 7: 204) 2) When Hadhrat Ata bin Yasaar (A.R) enquired from Hadrat Zaid bin Thaabit (Radiyallahu anhu) concerning reciting behind the Imam, he replied, "There is no recitation whatsoever behind the Imam." [Muslim, vol. 1, pg. 410] 3) Hadrat Jabir Radiyallahu anhu mentioned, "There is no salaah for him who does not recite Surah Fatiha in salaah, except for the one who performs salaah behind an Imam (he will not even recite Surah Fatiha when following the Imam)" [Tirmidhi]. Imam Tirmidhi (Rehmatullah alayh) says that this Hadith is Hasan and that from this Hadith Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal (Rehmatullah alayh) deduced that the salah of the person who does not recite Surah Fatiha will not be valid when he performs salah individually. 4) عن أبي هريرة عن النبي صلى الله عليه و سلم قال : إنما جعل الإمام ليؤتم به فلا تختلفوا عليه فإذا كبر فكبروا وإذا قرأ فأنصتوا...(سنن البيهقي، 2/157، أشرفيه) The Prophet (SallAllahu Alayhi WaSallam) says: "For indeed the Imam is to be followed so do not oppose him, if he does Takbir so do as he does and if he recites (Qur'an) remain silent..."
