瀬戸大橋のほぼ中央に位置する橋脚の島・与島の東側にある小与島。明治期に定住者ができ採石が本格化、大正から昭和にかけて最盛期をむかえ、人口も昭和30年に190人を数えていますが、採石業が下火になると急激に人口を減らし、平成7年の国勢調査では24人、同27年には夫婦だけで人口2となっているそうです。今では削られることのなくなった山やむき出しの地肌にも緑が見られるようになり、露天掘りの窪地には雨水が溜まり池ができています。北端にある建物は「ホテルアクア小与島」。昭和63年に瀬戸大橋が開通するのに合わせて建設されたホテルです。当初、瀬戸大橋が一望できる小与島全体をリゾート地として開発し、ホテルにも多くの来客を見込んでいましたが、運営会社の破綻により閉鎖に追い込まれました。
