The Red-collared Dove (Streptopelia tranquebarica), also known as the Red Turtle Dove, is a distinctive and attractive dove with several key features:
Size and Shape: Medium-sized dove, about 30-33 cm (12-13 inches) in length, with a robust body and long, pointed tail.
Coloration:
Body: Male is red with a bluish-gray head and female is brown overall. Both sexes have a dark collar. Female may be confused with other collared-doves, but is smaller with a shorter tail.
Wings and Tail: The wings have dark edges, and the tail is long with white tips.
Bill and Eyes: The bill is short and black, while the eyes are dark and surrounded by a thin white eye-ring.
Call: Known for its distinctive, soft cooing call which is often described as a mournful "coo-coo-coo."
Habitat
The Red-collared Dove is adaptable and occupies a variety of habitats:
Range: Native to the Indian subcontinent, including India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Bangladesh. It has also spread to parts of Southeast Asia.
Preferred Habitats:
Open Areas: Commonly found in open woodlands, forests, and savannas.
Human Habitation: Adapts well to urban and semi-urban areas, including parks, gardens, and farmland.
Nesting Sites: Often nests in trees, shrubs, or sometimes on buildings, making use of the relatively dense cover offered by urban and rural settings.
Life Span
The Red-collared Dove has a moderate lifespan, typical for doves:
Average Lifespan: Generally around 5-10 years in the wild. Lifespan can be affected by factors such as predation, disease, and environmental conditions.
Reproduction: Breeds throughout the year in most of its range, with peak breeding seasons varying by location. Nests are usually simple structures made of twigs, built in trees or shrubs. Both parents participate in incubating the eggs and feeding the chicks.
Behavior and Diet
Diet: Primarily feeds on seeds, grains, and fruits. It may also eat small invertebrates occasionally.
Social Structure: Often seen in pairs or small groups. They are relatively peaceful and can be seen foraging together or perched quietly.
Activity: Typically diurnal, being active during the day and resting at night. They are known for their calm and gentle demeanor.
Migration: Generally non-migratory but may make local movements in response to seasonal changes in food availability or weather conditions.
The Red-collared Dove's distinctive plumage and adaptability to various environments make it a notable species in its range. Its presence in both natural and human-modified landscapes highlights its versatility and the successful relationship it maintains with its surroundings.
