Opening Mistakes If you don't know what to do in the opening, perhaps you think that you have to study more opening theory. This is a typical mistake every amateur make, and you must learn from them and don't keep making the same misstep. Long opening lines don't have to be memorized, unless you are a 2100+ player. Instead, you should focus in the 3 main rules of the opening: Develop all your pieces. Control the center. Put your king into safety. But these rules shouldn't be used with the closed eyes! Don't just think in your next move, but instead discover where do you want to develop your pieces in the next few moves. Think ahead!Key Mistakes and How to Avoid Them Let's look at the diagram of the right, a tabiya in the Catalan Opening. Black can play normal developing moves like 6...c6 7.Nc3 Nbd7. But, after arriving to this position, you would ask yourself "what should I do with my poor Bc8?". What Black did wrong is that he only thought about the development of his knight, but not about the complete development of the forces. So, What should Black play in this position? Black can find a good diagonal for his bishop with 6...dxc4 7.Qc2 a6!, with the idea of 8.Qxc4 b5 9.Ac2 Bb7, when Black has a good position. He would follow with ...Nbd7, ..Rc8 and ...c5, when he can't be worse (and perhaps he is even better). Another important mistake is to react badly when your opponent deviates from your known theory. Should you play as usual? Should you start to panic? Definitely not! Lilov advice you to calculate your next move, but from your opponent's side! As someone said, "your position is as bad as your worst-placed piece". But, if you want to start active operations, there is a key mistake that even masters make. You can love to attack your opponent's king, but you can't do it every time. You have to be active in the side of the board where you have more possibilities!
