The car, originally released in 1999 as the Modena model, was absolutely adored by the motoring press and Autocar as we know, dubbed it Ferrari’s finest in addition to being the world’s best sports car. But it wasn’t just the usual suspects who ended up enthralled by the car, the team at Sega must’ve been pretty impressed too, because they made the Ferrari 360 the cover star of their Outrun 2 game. Until the launch of the 360, Ferrari had openly regarded the 355 as their best car ever and knew that to keep Ferrari a hot name for the new millennium. The new 360 was not only lighter and stiffer and we talk about the weight difference later on when we go for a drive, but notably faster due to the redesigned 3.6 V8 engine. The new engine was equipped with new inlet ducting, better cooling and improved exhaust system. In the Jaguar video last week, we discussed the importance of aerodynamics and Ferrari got it so right with the 360. The manufacturer boasted that due to the under body venturis and the smooth new profiling of the 360, it knocked spots off the 355 by achieving 180kg of downforce at 180mph. Impressed? Automotive bods of the era were, as they marvelled at the most aerodynamically efficient road car ever made. From Lamborghini to Porsche, everyone making cars in that wild world of car prices looking like telephone numbers suddenly had to sit up and take notice. The 360 was made until 2005 and still stands up and wows punters today - a true emerging classic of the modern age.
