For ‘Warcraft’-obsessive Rob Kazinsky, starring in a movie adaptation of his favourite game is a dream come true. A ranked player of ‘World of Warcraft (WoW)’, Kazinsky had put in a total of 463 days on the game. “If I had not been part of this movie, it would have bothered me my whole life,” the 32-year-old actor told Insing.com. “It is a big enough deal to be in any movie, but I think that I am fated to be here from Day one,” Kazinsky said. The former ‘EastEnd’-er plays fan favourite orc Orgrim Doomhammer in ‘Warcraft: The Beginning’. The movie sees the peaceful realm of Azeroth on the brink of war, as it faces invasion by orc warriors who are fleeing their dying home to colonize another. As one army faces the other, two heroes – human commander Anduin Lothar (Travis Fimmel) and orc chieftain Durotan (Toby Kebbell) – are set on a collision course that will decide the fate of their people and their home. Directed by Duncan Jones, the film also stars Paula Patton, Dominic Cooper, Ben Foster, Ben Schnetzer, Clancy Brown, Ruth Negga, Anna Galvin and Daniel Wu. With over 100 million accounts registered since 2005 and US$10 billion grossed, WoW ranks among the most successful games of all time. There’s also the long, sad story of videogame adaptations to consider – a consistent catastrophe from ‘Street Fighter’ and ‘Super Mario Bros’ to ‘Hitman: Agent 47’. But Kazinsky is hopeful that ‘Warcraft’ will change all that. “This is the break in the dark,” he said. “This is the first that we’ve taken a video game that has a good enough story to be a movie. They threw a tentpole budget to it and then gave it to people like Duncan Jones (director) and Bill Westenhofer (visual effects supervisor) who are fans of the game. This is the first time that anybody has enough faith in a game, to sit there and say, ‘make the movie right’,” Kazinsky explained. As for actor Ben Schnetzer, he realized that the magnitude of the project when he first viewed the movie’s trailer at the 2015 Comic Con. “I was a mess and shaking after seeing it,” the 26-year-old said. “That was the moment when I knew that we’re doing something big.” Schnetzer plays rebellious young mage Khadgar and according to him, bringing magic to life in this film is more than waving wands and casting spells. Fans familiar with game know that magic in the ‘Warcraft’ game is very colourful and vivid, with a lot of floating glyphs when a player casts a spell. The filmmakers want to recreate that effect which is something we haven’t seen in films before,” said visual effects guru Bill Westenhofer. “With our movement coordinator Terry Notary, Ben Foster and I worked on our magic choreography and how it manifests physically in this world. It’s not wands and spells, but something very organic and earthy,” Schnetzer said.
