Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport, serving the Madrid region, handled 17½ million passengers in Jan-May 2022 (almost 62 million in 2019 and 24.1 m in 2021). The busy airport handled a tad over 990 average daily aircraft movements in May '22. The airport covers an area of over 30 km2, ranking it as the second largest airport in Europe after Paris CDG. The airport has four passenger terminals, namely Terminals 1, 2 and 3 (contiguous structure) and Terminal 4 and a satellite Terminal 4S (located ca 2½ km from T4 and connected with an automated people mover). T4 is the largest with a floor area totalling 470 000 m2. Terminal 2 is the oldest of the present four passenger terminals and was opened in 1954 and referred to as the National Terminal at the time. Commercial flights began in 1933 at Madrid-Barajas airport. Spotting Location: Terminal 2
